La Thuile, at 1450 meters above sea level, is the last Italian municipality on the road of the hill of Piccolo San Bernardo (SS26), a historic pass for connections between Italy and France. On this pass at 2188 meters there are in fact signs of the presence of Salassi, pre-Roman population of Celtic origin, who left the cromlech of the Little Saint Bernard.

Even more numerous are the Roman and later medieval buildings, the same hospice of the Piccolo San Bernardo, built thanks to the thrust of the monks of Bernardo d’Aosta, since then and still today refuge for the vindants.

La Thuile is a popular ski resort: thanks to its connection to the French resort of La Rosière, the Espace San Bernardo boasts a 160 km area consisting of 80 slopes for alpine skiing served by 38 cableways, 11 of which are chairlifts, 1 gondola and 5 ski lifts, as well as about twenty kilometres of cross-country ski slopes.

The Thuile can be reached from the south along the A4 motorway from Milan, then the A5 from Turin – Monte Bianco exit at Morgex and then the State Road 26 for 15 km or the Regional Road of Colle San Carlo. It can also be reached from the north by Switzerland through the Great St Bernard Tunnel to Aosta, from the west by Chamonix France via Traforo del Monte Bianco to Courmayeur and from the south by France via the Little St Bernard Hill.
