Villa Sacro Monte
The villa, unique in its kind, is set in a private park of one hectare with sloping terraces, expertly planted and kept in the Italian style with tall trees including sequoias, cedars and centuries-old firs, and offers splendid views of the hills below. Strolling along the avenues of the charming park we find baroque female figures and often graceful wild animals. A gorge has been transformed into a 'gorge' according to the decadent taste of the time. The property covers an area of 400sqm and is arranged on four floors, with attention to the smallest details and finished with details of high level and value. The frescoes adorn every room of the villa: bands painted with floral motifs in liberty style below the coffered ceilings, or simple geometric decorations on the walls border the walnut boiseries. On the ceiling of the conservatory, putti circle a muse covered in light veils. Among the various rooms we find the Trecento Room in neo-Gothic style with a four-poster bed characterised by a glass part that looks out onto Campo dei Fiori and a private terrace with a view of Lake Varese and the hills of Piacenza. The Cinquecento Room is embellished with authentic 16th-century pieces and has a large private terrace facing south and shaded by centuries-old cedars of Lebanon. The Ottocento Room in the ceiling of the so-called "Sala Caccia" (Hunting Room) is characterised by large windows with a view of the park, bloodhounds and hounds chase partridges, pheasants and hares. In addition we find the breakfast room in a bow window almost suspended over Lake Varese and the Lombardy plain, the room is characterised by furnishings that replicate the German Gothic style with great imagination. Finally we find the wonderful veranda with Art Nouveau coloured glass that separates it from the quiet of the park.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a forerunner of the nascent Varese industry chose one of the most beautiful spots in the Varese area, Sacro Monte, as the home for himself and his beloved wife. The wealthy patron commissioned the project to Lodovico Pogliaghi, at that time a famous Milanese artist, who was working on the central door of the Cathedral. Pogliaghi oriented the villa towards south, towards Lake Varese and the Po Valley, flooding it with sunlight from the very large windows; he embellished it with countless ancient works of art, and decorated it with furniture that faithfully reproduced the most varied styles of the past, according to the eclectic taste of the time. Today, UNESCO has included the Sacro Monte of Varese among the World Heritage sites.
